Who qualifies for assistance?

Services are offered to senior citizens of Nemaha County who have physical restrictions. For example, they are no longer able to drive and the Handibus is not available or is not accessible by them. They may have poor vision and need help cleaning adequately. They may be too frail to vacuum or to clean up their yard after a storm.

Neighbor to Neighbor does not impose financial criteria to determine eligibility for assistance. We help people of all income levels. There is no charge for our service; however, that does not mean that the service is "free." Volunteer drivers are reimbursed for their mileage and we have all the usual operating expenses of any organization. All clients are encouraged to donate as they are able, but a donation is never a pre-requisite for assistance.

In general, first-time clients are interviewed by the Neighbor to Neighbor Project Director to determine if their needs can be met by a volunteer. They may then be assigned to a regular volunteer, or they may be assisted by whoever is available when needed.

What kind of assistance is provided?

Neighbor to Neighbor volunteers can provide:

• Transportation for local medical appointments, shopping and other necessary errands. (please make transportation requests at least 24 hours in advance)
• Occasional help with indoor and outdoor household chores, such as:
  • light housekeeping
  • yard work
  • minor home repair
• Occasional respite care
• Telephone reassurance
• Limited transportation to medical appointments outside Nemaha County

All services are contingent on the availability of a volunteer at the time of each request.

What we don't do.

There are some things Neighbor to Neighbor does not do.

• We do not provide medical care or personal hygiene care.
• We cannot transport individuals who need more than minimal help to get in and out of the vehicle.
• We do not provide emergency medical transportation.
• We do not provide transportation outside Nemaha County except for medical appointments.
