About Us
2011 marked Neighbor to Neighbor's 15th year of service to the senior citizens of Nemaha County.
Since 1996, the mission of Neighbor to Neighbor has been to facilitate independent living for the senior citizens of Nemaha County. We do this by helping with the ordinary tasks of daily life, including transportation. It's not rocket science, but it means the world to senior citizens and their families who are struggling to find a way to avoid expensive nursing home or assisted living care.
The value of a Neighbor to Neighbor volunteer is not determined so much by the particular service being provided, but by the availability of someone to provide it. A little extra help goes a long way when the need is ongoing, especially when family members do not live nearby.
The frustration of not being close enough to help, or the constant necessity of being on call for everything, can really take a toll on family members. The flip side of that coin is that the person who needs help begins to feel guilty about asking for it. It all adds up to stress for everyone; stress that takes the joy out of family relationships and may lead to physical and emotional health problems for both the elderly and their caregivers.
Neighbor to Neighbor helps by matching volunteers with seniors who no longer drive or who need occasional respite care or help with chores. When family members are relieved of some of their caregiving duties, they are free to just "be family" more often. And those who need assistance know that they can call on Neighbor to Neighbor without feeling like they're burdening their family yet again.
We don't charge for services, but like any organization, we do have expenses. Our operations are funded by a variety of sources including local donations, private foundation grants, fundraising events and a grant from the Senior Companion Program of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, through its Senior Companion grant, provided $19,123.57 in cash, or 48% of total (cash and in-kind) program expenses for the year ended June 30, 2011.
